Rules of the Library

  • Rules of the Library of the Department of Estonian and Comparative Folklore

    • Students and staff of the University of Tartu can borrow books, journals, and recent Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations from the library. Others may use the library’s materials on the spot.
    • Books with a red mark on them may not be taken out of the library.
    • The books are issued for borrowing by Maili Pilt or Liilia Laaneman.
    • To borrow a book, you must have with you your Tartu University reader’s card or your ID-card.
    • Books can be borrowed for two weeks.  At the end of this time, the books must be either returned or renewed.
    • You can renew due dates by sending e-mail to marko.tiido@ut.ee or renew them yourself in the My ESTER area of the e-catalogue. Here you can also see the history of your borrowings, due dates of other materials that you have borrowed and what books you have reserved. Due date can be renewed no more than 10 times.
    • To renew electronically the due dates of materials you have borrowed you need a PIN-code. PIN-code can be chosen in the e-catalogue ESTER. Enter your name, number of your library card together with the letter ‘y’ before the number, and the PIN-code that you have chosen.
    • You should be well aware of the return date of books, as loans visible on the Ester library webpage accrue a fine for each day they are kept out beyond their due date. (The fine is 6 eurocents per day. The fines can be paid at the Department.)
    • Due dates are not renewed and new items are not lent
      • if the due date has been overrun more than 30 days;
      • if the item has been reserved by another user;
      • if the borrower already has a debt of unpaid fine of 2 euros or more.
    • Newer Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations can be borrowed for one week.
    • Those books which do not yet have a barcode are entered into the temporary computer catalogues held by Maili Pilt.
    • If you are interested in a particular theme, but do not know which relevant titles are held by our library, it is possible to consult Maili (room 207). Consultation times are Mondays 10-12 and 13-15, Wednesdays 10-12 and 13-15, and Thursdays 10-12.
    • It is possible to check the books on the open shelves and borrow books during the ordinary opening hours of the department by asking the departmental secretary. Room 209 contains literature in both Estonian and foreign languages. The Estonian books are arranged in the usual order of the Estonian alphabet. Foreign literature is arranged according to the following order: AÄBCDEFGHIJKLMNOÕÖPQRSTUÜVWXYZ. The books are arranged by the first three letters of the author’s  surname. Edited and multi-author works are placed according to the initial letters of the work’s title. Some yearbooks, journals and serials are to be found in rooms 207 and 213. Bachelor’s and Master’s dissertations are to be found in room 207.
