Mongolian Research Lab

The Mongolian Research Lab was established at the University of Tartu in 2022 to carry out and coordinate research, educational projects, and to provide expertise concerning various aspects of Mongolia, Mongolian and related communities across borders. The Lab also aims to enhance relations between Mongolia and Estonia, and our partners from elsewhere.

Currently the Lab focuses on Inner Asia and on other post-socialist Central Asian regions, cultures, societies, specifics of the economic and political development, cross-cultural and geopolitical relations, and on-going processes that influence local and global communities.

Mongolian area studies have and are contributing to various research fields: multiculturalism; traditions of Buddhism, Shamanism and eco-cosmologies; contemporary nomadism; post-socialism; imperialism, postcolonial and national ideologies; democracy; studies of capitalism and neoliberalism; strategies of dealing with local and global disasters; studies of kinship and gender; and many more. Mongolia and Mongolian communities are important subjects in the ongoing regional and global processes of cultural, political, economic, environmental, etc. nature. Beyond disciplinary contributions, research and cooperation in this field facilitate an understanding of the grounds, perspectives and risks on a larger scale of contemporary Asian-European relations.
