Texts of local Buddhist tradition in Southwest China (preliminary fieldwork notes)

The lecture will share a recent discovery of Buddhist manuscripts that have been copied by masters and their disciples and play a significant role in contemporary ritual practices. Some of the manuscripts are replicas of the famous sutras, while others contain parts of the religious texts, not only Buddhist, and the passages written by local religious figures. Many of such texts are related to funeral rites or ceremonies for the deceased (parents, hungry ghosts, etc.). In this lecture, the distinct features of these texts, their structure, language, topics and ritual functions will be discussed.
