Workshop about Borders and Boundaries within and at the Edges of Europe, 24-26 May

International workshop at the Department of Ethnology, University of Tartu, May 24-26
Ülikooli 16-109 (access is located at the back of the building)

The break-up of the Soviet Union, the EU Eastern enlargement as well as recent migration flows and the conflict between Russia and the ‘West’ have affected border regimes and stimulated debates about cultural, economic and political boundaries that partly run across borders. The workshop addresses these debates by paying particular attention to different views and practices of in- and exclusion which cannot be sufficiently explained by ethnic or national belonging but might also point to people’s differing positions and (migratory) life stories as well as to previous borders and boundaries. The focus on Eastern Europe will be complemented by insights from research on other areas at the edges of Europe. The workshop takes an anthropological perspective on borders and boundaries by including insights from related disciplines like history, geography, sociology, and others.

Programme and abstracts of the presentations can be read on the workshop webpage.
