Established in 2019, the UNESCO Chair on Applied Studies of Intangible Cultural Heritage is engaged in teaching and research, networking, and collaboration projects. We analyse cultural heritage as a social and economic process that suggests further exploration into traditional knowledge and skills while facing today’s challenges. Our keyword is global education. We promote the UN sustainability goals and facilitate social connectivity when building a bridge between the academic world, civil society, local communities, and policy-making.

What is a UNESCO Chair?

UNESCO Chairs have been established at universities all over the world since the launch of the programme in 1992. They aim to enhance higher education and scientific research through knowledge sharing and collaborative work. They promote international institutional cooperation with an agenda of wider social impact. The University of Tartu UNESCO Chair is linked to the implementation of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage (2003) but embraces also cultural diversity and heritage matters in general.
