On Thursday 20 April at 14:15-15:45 (Ülikooli 16-212) Stefan Gelfgren will give a public lecture "Resistance, adaptation and embracement: how and why three different Christian movements use digital media".
Stefan Gelfgren
Associate professor at Department of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Umea University
This presentation will focus on how three different Swedish Christian movements use and perceive digital media in their work. The Charismatic movement embrace the use of digital media as a tool to spread the Word of God; the Church of Sweden use digital media to be available for anyone anytime; and the Laestadian movement use digital media restrictively and only when the digital option is better than analogous. These differences are primarily not a matter of competence or resources, but a matter of self-image, and how digital media is considered to utilize their different aims and goals. This also raises questions about the fields of digital religion and digital humanities, which will also be discussed.
