UNESCO Chair took international students on a field trip

On their field trip to Tallinn students from the course "Heritage and Cultural Policies" learned about the heritage framework in Estonia.

The trip included lectures by and meetings with various stakeholders representing different levels of the heritage field – and important partners of the UNESCO Chair on Applied Studies of Intangible Cultural Heritage (University of Tartu).

Guided tour in the Historic Centre of Tallinn (inscribed on the World Heritage list), led by Kersti Peetris, a student of the Estonian Academy of Arts

Guest speakers talked about their organisations and their work in the heritage field. In the following discussion students brought up subjects like distribution of resources across heritage sectors, heritage at the time of crisis, good practices of revitalisation, international cooperation, the impact of tourism and practicalities of heritage management.

In the afternoon the students learned about the activities of the Ukrainian Cultural Centre and the Ukrainian community in Tallinn. The centre has also experience working with a UNESCO list of intangible cultural heritage. The guided tour in the Historic Centre of Tallinn provided insights into opportunities and challenges it faces as a UNESCO-designated World Heritage site.

Central course taught by the UNESCO Chair

The trip was lead by junior researcher Siarhiej Makarevich who teaches the course "Heritage and Cultural Policies".

This is the central English language class proposed by the UNESCO Chair. It focuses on the conceptualisation and application of cultural heritage in diverse geographic, socio-cultural and economic contexts, with particular attention intangible cultural heritage.

It is part of the curriculum for international students from two MA programs
