Alexandra Cherechesi (Jaéni ülikool, Hispaania) loeng “Stakes in their hearts”: Vampires, witches and the evil eye in the oral narratives of Romania 4. novembril kell 16.15 (Ülikooli 16-212)

Alexandra Chereches (Tartu ülikooli Dora Plus doktorant; Jaéni ülikool, Hispaania) peab loengu “Stakes in their hearts”: Vampires, witches and the evil eye in the oral narratives of Romania 4. novembril kell 16.15 (Ülikooli 16-212).

Lühiülevaade:

Romanian oral literature shows a richness of fantastic figures like the strigoi, the moroi, the vârcolaci, who can be related to vampires and were-wolves, but also creatures like Marţolea, who teases disrespectful women who decide to work on Tuesdays. In this lecture, I will focus on the strigoi, which can be considered a vampire but also a witch or a ghost with different powers. These strigoi are sometimes revenants who return from the other world for many reasons; also, they can embody people linked to sorcery and witchcraft who use their abilities to obtain all sorts of benefits. With this contribution, I would like to highlight the continuity of these stories on mythical and supernatural figures like the strigoi and the belief in the evil eye. I will present texts recently recorded in Transylvania and interviews made to Romanian immigrants who live in Spain, emphasizing the way the narrators perceive the reality or fictionality of these events.

Alexandra Chereches, Dora-Plus grantee at the University of Tartu, is a PhD student at the University of Jaén (Spain). Her research focuses on oral narratives and songs of the Romanian immigrants who live in Madrid. She has recorded and examined their life stories, as well as their beliefs and traditions. She has been a Fulbright grantee (2015-2017) at Villanova University (Pennsylvania) and her current work is supported by a scholarship of the Spanish Ministry of Education.

Kõik on oodatud!
